Welding nonconformances become expensive when the paperwork does not clearly connect the original condition, disposition, repair activity and final verification. A practical NCR workflow should make that chain easy to follow.
Start with positive identification
Record the project, item, weld or joint identification, drawing reference and the document that governs the work. The goal is to make it possible for another qualified person to understand exactly what was affected without relying on memory.
Describe the observed condition
Document what was observed in objective terms. Avoid turning the form itself into an acceptance standard. Applicable codes, specifications, drawings, approved procedures and contract requirements remain controlling.
Control disposition and repair
Where repair is authorized, connect the disposition to the applicable repair instruction or approved procedure. Record who performed the work and preserve the traceability needed by the project.
Close the loop
Reinspection should reference the original NCR so the final status is clear. A closed record should show the original condition, disposition, repair or corrective action when applicable, reinspection and final closeout.
